Search Engine Marketing Training Tip – Footer Links
Question: How many links should you put in your website footer?
Answer: As few as possible. You need to structure of where your links are pointing to and from where.
It is not such a good idea to put a large number of links in the footer of your website.
Some website owners put their entire sitemap with hundreds of links in the footer. This could easily be seen as keyword stuffing or spamming the search engines and could, in a worst case scenario, lead to some form of ranking penalty for your website.
It is much better to link only to the most important pages on your website. You need to direct any visitor through your website and guide them to the pages you rally want them to see. If you give them a link to just any webpage whether it is from the footer, top of your site or the side bar menu, it could also overwhelm and confuse them. And you know that a confused mind is likely to say ‘no’ – which means clicking away from your site.
Try to evenly distribute your links between your navigation menus and keep the links, that are available from your main menus, to a minimum. Google recently discussed this in a Webmasters Help Forum thread and we offer an entire course, the GROW Search Engine Marketing Training Course – free for a limited time – to show you how to structure your website and its links for optimal search engine optimization.
